IPC 412 in Simple Words

If someone knowingly receives or keeps stolen property transferred during a dacoity (robbery by a gang) or receives property from a person belonging to a dacoit gang, they can be punished with imprisonment for life or up to ten years, and may also face a fine.

Importance and Practical application

Targets those receiving property from dacoity or dacoit gangs.

Practical application:

A man is caught in possession of expensive jewelry that he purchased at a significantly low price from a known dacoit. The police trace the jewelry back to a recent dacoity. Since the man was aware that the property was stolen during a dacoity, he could be charged under IPC Section 412 for knowingly receiving property transferred by dacoity, facing up to life imprisonment or rigorous imprisonment for up to 10 years, along with a fine.

Conclusion

Imposes severe penalties for receiving property from dacoity or dacoit gangs.
